About Darndale Belcamp Initiative

Darndale Belcamp Village Centre manages Darndale Belcamp Initiative however, both companies are separate legal entities with both having a Board of Directors made up of 12 voluntary members. Darndale Belcamp Initiative is a sponsor for Community Employment and Job Initiative programmes with over 90 staff currently employed through these programmes which are funded by the Department of Social Protection.

 

Employment Programmes

Darndale Belcamp Initiative (DBI)  has  been  acting  as  sponsor  for  Job Initiative (JI) and Community Employment (CE) Programmes since 1996. The programmes support social and environmental regeneration within our community. Over the years, the Community Employment Programme has become the  mainstay of many local organisations. The range of activity has increased substantially as a result of the training and finance available, as well as the quality of activity and output.  The current level of community activity would be unsustainable without the continuation of Community Employment and Job Initiative programmes. These programmes have also helped to enhance the development of many local organisations. It is now generally accepted that areas suffering from deprivation and social exclusion require a co-ordinated and integrated response involving community organisations and statutory bodies. Many local community groups that DBI works in partnership with are playing a major role in the development of the community.

 

An essential part of local development is the preparation of individuals from within the community for meaningful jobs in the private, public and community sectors. The programmes encourage employees to undergo training while on JI and CE and to seek full or part-time employment. They have also contributed to providing local services and allow people to re-enter employment while managing other aspects of their day-to-day lives.

 

Scope and Effectiveness

The scope and effectiveness  of local activities are greatly enhanced by the participation of JI and CE employees. Employees say they benefit from the work experience, the contacts made in work, the friendships they form with colleagues, the training received, the encouragement to plan their future and to seek work opportunities. The work  available on the programmes is providing great satisfaction. It enables a person to work and socialise with people, where normally, the person would have limited  opportunities to leave their homes. In an area with exceptionally high unemployment, the projects have helped many people find jobs. During 2015, 21 Community Employment participants finished on the programme, 8 went on to further employment and 4 went on to further education. Darndale Belcamp Initiative employs 94 people through Community Employment and Job Initiative, making us the largest employer in Darndale.

About the Community Services Programme

The Community Services Programme is designed to address locally identified gaps in the provision of services to communities and to exploit the potential of community assets and resources already in place, to support the delivery of services to improve community well-being. The programme plays an important role in addressing disadvantage

and provides long term employment opportunities for people who have been previously unemployed. It focuses on communities where public and private services are lacking, either through geographical or social isolation or because demand levels are not sufficient. The programme also enables the benefit of other public investment to be realised,

as in the case of investment in community centres and resources. A core requirement of the programme is that service providers generate non-public revenue from their operations by charging fees for services delivered or fundraising companies in contract with the programme must be not-for-profit, social enterprise or community business in

nature. The services provided are wide ranging and include facilities and activities for older people and those with disabilities, rural transport, community media, childcare, leisure facilities, home insulation and environmental projects.

 

Management and Funding

The Programme is managed for the Department of Social Protection by Pobal, a not-for-profit company that manages programmes on behalf of the Irish Government and the EU.  Darndale Belcamp Village Centre has been part  of  the  Community  Services  Programme,  formerly  known  as  the Social Economy Programme, since  2003 and currently employs 6.5 people.

VACANCY - HANDY HELPERS SUPERVISOR
DARNDALE BELCAMP VILLAGE CENTRE


The Handy Helpers Service is specifically aimed at providing a maintenance service for older people in their homes, the successful candidate must be friendly, kind natured, caring and strong empathy towards the needs of older people.

Qualifications


4 years experience working in a maintenance environment specialising in excellent DIY skills, carpentry, gardening, painting and decorating, plumbing and tiling.
Excellent leadership and team working skills Full Clean Driving Licence Essential.


Successful applicants will be required to have Garda Clearance PRIOR to commencement.
